CoD Black Ops - a Battle.net Exclusive

With the success of Battle Royale style games such as Fortnite and PUBG, the FPS market, and specifically, Call of Duty have found themselves struggling to contend with these new up-and-comers who are entering the scene.

To combat the Battle Royale trend of its competitors, Call of Duty and Treyarch have — according to multiple reports — not only will introduce a Battle Royale mode in lue of the traditional ‘campaign mode’, but will also be making the PC version of the game exclusive to Battle.net.

While it had been rumored that the change to the Battle Royale format would take place, the move to Battle.net exclusiveness came as a surprise to most. What does this kind of a move signal, though?

As mentioned and eluded to at the outset, Fortnite and PUBG have had massive success with the Battle Royale, cross platform style of play and have really pigeon holed of that slice of the market for themselves. Well until now, that is.

A move of this caliber signals that the developers are wanting to focus on the ever growing number of PC gamers by producing a quality game in the mold of Fortnite and PUBG, the two games that most are going to these days. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that it will be a cross-platform game, as some reports are already starting to allude to.

Even if you’re not a PC gamer, this is still a good sign for fans of the COD franchise. It signals that those in charge are willing to adapt to the ever changing market, want to retain as many fans as possible, and are striving to produce a quality game. For those of us that’ve been with the COD franchise through thick and thin, I for one am excited to see the direction in which Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 goes as they venture down this new road they’re on with Battle.net, and in the Battle Royale game.
