Cox Acquires OWL Position

The Overwatch League recently mentioned their interest in expanding and the first team has been confirmed. Cox Enterprises sent a representative to negotiate a deal with Activision Blizzard this past weekend and closed a deal. Cox bought the Atlanta, Georgia slot for next season. Cox, being based out of Georgia, has gladly accepted this deal which was estimated to have sold for 30 to 60 million dollars as the spot is sold on a bidding basis. Reports have stated that there are 6 slots being added for season two including cities such as Guangzhou and Paris. We can expect Activision Blizzard to find the right partners to increase the following of the league.

We can expect a large amount of support for the team as Cox is one of the largest telecommunications company and owns sites like Kelly Blue Book and Autotrader.com. Comcast has already made their mark within the Overwatch League as their ownership and support of the Philadelphia Fusion has shown in spades as they were one of the teams in the Grand Finals in New York. With comparable assets to Comcast, Cox has a tall order to fill as they will have to generate a new brand and field a new team to represent Atlanta. The Grand Finals generated tons of new and unique viewership as it was streamed on ESPN and Disney, the new additions to the Overwatch League must attempt to capitalize as most fans have already selected a team to root for. Knowing this, we can expect great amounts of growth to the Overwatch League and an explosive start to Season 2 next year.
