Warzone is nerfing SBMM

Warzone is set to follow Black Ops 7’s example by introducing Open Matchmaking in Season 1, a system where player skill is only “minimally considered” when forming lobbies.

When the Season 1 update drops on December 4, Warzone will fully integrate with BO7, bringing all of the new multiplayer weapons into battle royale. But during a November 26 Dev Talk, Raven Software also confirmed that another major feature will be carried over.

Open Matchmaking debuted in the BO7 beta and stayed in place for the full release. Under this system, skill plays only a small role in matchmaking—a change made after years of complaints that strict SBMM hurt high-skill players and created unbalanced lobbies.

Warzone will now adopt the same approach, aiming to deliver matches with a broader mix of skill levels instead of consistently grouping players with others of similar ability.

Warzone players remain skeptical of Open Matchmaking

Despite many fans welcoming the shift to Open Matchmaking, others aren’t convinced.

Since BO7’s launch, players—including prominent streamers—have argued that matchmaking still doesn’t feel truly “open.” While it may be less restrictive than before, many report being placed into tougher lobbies after strong performances.

This has caused some to question whether skill is still a bigger factor than the developers suggest, especially given the ambiguous phrasing of “minimally considered.” So when Warzone confirmed it would adopt the system, skepticism quickly followed.

“Yeah, so basically nothing different LOL,” one fan posted on X. Another added, “LMAO if it’s anything like BO7 MP, then it’s essentially the same s**t we’re playing now.”
