New Call of Duty being developed, for mobile

It would seem that Christmas definitely came early for fans of the Call of Duty franchise. First, they were treated to the joyous news that the latest rendition in the celebrated series would arrive later this year under the title of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This will mark the fourth entry in the timeline that Call of Duty has been able to establish in the future. The first 3 Black Ops games have gained something of a cult following with numerous characters, storylines and maps that have helped redefined what a Call of Duty game could’ve been.

Every Call of Duty fan has been impatiently waiting to find out how good Black Ops 4 turns out to be. However, before they reached Black Ops 4, they could first come across another welcome gift.

News broke last week that a Call of Duty mobile game could be in the works after a King job listing meant for a level designer in Stockholm went viral. The listing explains clearly that “the aim is to create a Call of Duty experience on mobile, while also breaking new ground for mobile and redefining the genre”. It was also reiterated that it was far from being a poor mobile restructuring of the game in order to cash in on the brand’s value across platforms. The game will be a “fresh, social, and highly accessible, while providing a very authentic game experience” that will add tremendous value to the Call of Duty brand in itself.

The job for which the listing was made involves creating and refining new and existing levels. This will also cover the challenge of adding balance and certain amount of fun to the game in order to optimize it for mobile usage. There were two other job listings that were made too including senior tools developer, senior network engineer. Both of these jobs will be at the back end in order to create a game that is designed well-enough to provide an authentic feel to the Call of Duty game.

This won’t be the first time that a Call of Duty game is being developed. Activision has been involved in the past in releasing Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies and Call of Duty: Heroes. Though there were generally positive reviews for these titles as well as generally positive feedback. However, the reason for Activision’s acquisition of King was to build on the success that Heroes provided and consolidate it to new heights by building a game that could be considered of a similar caliber as any of its flagship titles.

This could also have something to do with the fact that releasing a mobile game is a fantastic way to introduce new fans and audiences to the series. Series fatigue has been a major issue for the flagship, when many pointing to the fact that the series needs an inflow of younger and more enthusiastic fans.

The success of Fortnite and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds has a lot to do with their mobile spin-offs which have successfully captivated their fan bases.

There’s no information yet on when this game will be available to the general public but hopefully more details will surface soon enough.
