Call of Duty Rumors Hit Hard With Reported Standalone Zombies Game — But Officially Denied
Recent chatter in the Call of Duty community has focused on claims that a standalone Zombies game might be in the works, though the franchise has now publicly pushed back on the idea.
According to a leak shared by notable insider TheGhostOfHope, delays affecting Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox could have triggered big changes in Call of Duty’s future release plans. Originally, Modern Warfare 4 was reportedly intended to be a flagship launch game for the new hardware. But with that hardware now pushed back, Activision and Microsoft have allegedly discussed releasing two separate titles alongside the next-gen console — one focused on traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and another built specifically around the Zombies mode.
In this scenario, the Zombies game would stand on its own, possibly developed by Treyarch, and receive regular updates much like Warzone’s live service does. This standalone approach could let the mode evolve with ongoing seasonal content and dedicated support.
However, the official Call of Duty account responded to the rumors on social media with a simple denial, stating: “The rumor factory working overtime. This ain’t it.” — making it clear that the company doesn’t currently have a standalone Zombies title in development, at least as described in the leaks.
With conflicting claims from both the leak and the franchise’s own PR team, it’s still unclear whether a standalone Zombies project will ever come to life — but the discussion has certainly sparked plenty of excitement among fans.
