CoD Black Ops: Favoring PC Over Console?

Call of Duty developers are keeping rather tight-lipped about their upcoming release causing many to speculate or resort to leaks for any info they can get. However, with May 17th, the date Call of Duty developers plan on announcing official details about the upcoming game right around the corner, Activision decided to give us one very interesting piece of information. Activision Blizzard President Cody Johnson made a statement saying, “This is a game that will push the envelope with innovation. You’ll see that in the core game where we have a number of exciting new developments to roll out soon. But also in the game’s appeal on growth platforms like PC where we have invested significant dedicated resources to ensure we can deliver a great PC game to that community.

This is a pretty big announcement and not just because Cody Johnson made some pretty bold statements about Call of Duty, but mainly because they are actually choosing to make a game that has an enjoyable PC experience, something they have never really done in the past. For years now Call of Duty has been the go-to console shooter with most other franchise in the genre choosing to favor PC. After all most people feel as though a mouse and keyboard is the most comfortable way to play a shooter.

Much like adding a battle royale mode, this is a decision that could make or break this upcoming Call of Duty title. On the one hand, Call of Duty is game that at this point most hardcore gamers have shunned in favor of other PC games like Overwatch or Counter-Strike. However, if Activision manages to make a game that not only entices hardcore gamers once again and is able to satisfy the needs and wants of PC gamers their video game sales could go through the roof. That being said, if the game comes out and can’t distract pc gamers from games like Overwatch, then allocating that much time and resources to a PC port could be incredibly cost inefficient.

Ultimately it’s an idea that sounds really good on paper. Being able to successfully port Call of Duty over to the PC could bring in a whole new market of gamers and vastly increase revenue, but if this game doesn’t, “push the envelope with innovation” this could be their biggest flop yet.
