Raven Software has officially announced that grappling hooks will be removed from standard Battle Royale and Resurgence modes in an upcoming patch this month. The mobility tool, which launched alongside the Black Ops 7 integration last December, will no longer be available in competitive playlists, though it may remain in limited-time modes and Black Ops Royale.
The decision stems from widespread community feedback regarding both gameplay balance and technical issues. While some players embraced the aggressive flanking opportunities and faster-paced rotations the hooks enabled, competitive players and streamers noted they disrupted traditional positioning strategy. The persistent glitch that trapped players in animation loops for extended periods also frustrated the playerbase, with developers unable to resolve it without removing the feature entirely.
The competitive community appears divided on the removal. Notable streamers like HusKerrs welcomed the change as beneficial for both casual and ranked play, while CPreds argued that grappling hooks oversimplified endgame strategy by eliminating the need for careful rotation planning. Conversely, some content creators expressed disappointment, arguing the hooks added creative depth to the sandbox experience and shouldn't have been completely removed.
The update is expected to roll out in late August or early September, with the timing designed to avoid conflicts with other major releases. Players invested in grappling hook-based strategies should prepare for significant meta shifts in their primary game modes.
