After months of leaks and rumors, Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has officially confirmed that a new Modern Warfare game is coming in 2026.
The announcement came during the May 21 episode of the COD POD podcast, where Infinity Ward revealed they are leading development on this year’s Call of Duty and described it as “the definitive Modern Warfare.”
The game is heavily rumored to be titled “Modern Warfare 4.” It marks Infinity Ward’s first release since 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. Although Modern Warfare 3 launched in 2023, development was primarily handled by Sledgehammer Games.
Infinity Ward studio heads Mark Grigsby and Jack O’Hara also shared a statement:
“As a new chapter begins for this studio, we’re focused on what defines us: passion, precision, obsession, and an unrelenting drive to make the best entertainment in the industry.
“Our next game reflects that mindset.
“Determined. Bold. Relentless. Built by a team pushing every detail, every system, and every moment to its limit.
“On behalf of everyone at IW, we’re proud of what we’ve been building and excited to finally start sharing it with you.”
Official details on gameplay remain unknown, though Activision has confirmed the game will not release on PS4, which likely rules out Xbox One as well. It also will not launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
According to leaks, the story could focus on tensions between North and South Korea, while the logo may feature the Korean symbol for four (사). Gameplay rumors also suggest it may closely resemble Modern Warfare 2, potentially reversing several gameplay changes introduced in Black Ops 6 and 7.
