TTK rumour mill for MW4

Modern Warfare 4’s Time-to-Kill Lands Between MW2 and Black Ops 7, According to CoD Expert

As anticipation for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 continues to build, one of the biggest questions surrounding the game has been how quickly players will be eliminated in multiplayer. Time-to-Kill (TTK) has always been one of the defining features of any Call of Duty title, influencing everything from weapon balance to the overall pace of combat.

Following hands-on gameplay footage, Call of Duty analyst TheXclusiveAce has broken down a selection of weapons from the game to estimate how MW4's TTK compares with previous entries in the franchise.

Faster than Black Ops, but not as punishing as MW2

After analyzing assault rifles, SMGs, and light machine guns shown during the reveal, the early data suggests that Modern Warfare 4 sits in the middle ground between Infinity Ward's faster-paced titles and Treyarch's slower gunfights.

Most of the assault rifles examined required four to five bullets to secure a kill, while several SMGs also followed a similar pattern. One exception was the X-58 Nyx, which can eliminate enemies in four shots but fires at a slower rate, preventing it from becoming overwhelmingly powerful.

The LMG category appears to be even deadlier, with weapons like the Type 73 and FINN capable of dropping enemies in as few as four and three shots respectively. However, the heavier weapons also feature slower fire rates to offset their damage output.

When these figures are averaged across the available weapons, Modern Warfare 4's TTK comes out slightly faster than Modern Warfare 3 (2023), Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7, while remaining slower than Modern Warfare (2019) and Modern Warfare 2 (2022), both of which were known for extremely fast gunfights.

A balance between speed and skill

This approach could strike a balance that many players have been asking for. Modern Warfare 2's extremely fast TTK often drew criticism because opponents could be eliminated before they had much opportunity to react, reducing the overall skill gap.

By slowing engagements down slightly without reaching Black Ops levels of survivability, Infinity Ward appears to be aiming for firefights that still feel lethal while giving players more room to outplay opponents through movement and accuracy.

That said, these conclusions are based on only a handful of showcased weapons. The complete multiplayer arsenal may alter the overall averages once players gain access to the full game.

More changes could arrive before launch

It's also worth remembering that weapon damage values are rarely final before release. Infinity Ward has already confirmed it will closely monitor community feedback during the upcoming beta, meaning damage profiles and overall TTK could still be adjusted ahead of launch.

For now, the early signs point toward a multiplayer experience that avoids the lightning-fast pace of MW2 while remaining noticeably more lethal than Treyarch's recent Black Ops entries. If these values remain unchanged, Modern Warfare 4 could offer a compromise that satisfies fans of both gameplay styles.
