The next Call of Duty game planned for 2026 is set to drop support for older consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This marks a major shift for the long-running franchise, which has continued releasing games on last-gen systems for years after newer consoles launched.
The confirmation comes after rumors suggested the upcoming title might still be tested on PS4. However, Activision shut that down, stating clearly that the new game is not being developed for Sony’s older console. While Xbox One wasn’t mentioned directly, it’s widely assumed it will also be left behind.
If this holds, the 2026 release will be the first mainline Call of Duty game in over a decade to fully move away from last-gen hardware. Previous entries, including 2025’s installment, still supported both old and current consoles, even as newer systems became more common.
The decision likely reflects a desire to focus on more advanced technology. Older hardware can limit performance, graphics, and overall game design, so dropping last-gen support could allow developers to push the series further.
That said, the move may disappoint players who haven’t upgraded yet, since millions still use older consoles. Still, after nearly six years into the current console generation, the franchise appears ready to fully transition to newer platforms.
