Pre Ordering battlepasses?

Electronic Arts is testing a new monetization strategy in Battlefield 6 by allowing players to pre-purchase Season 3’s battle pass before any of its rewards have been officially revealed.

Season 3 is scheduled to launch on May 12, and players recently discovered a new in-game option that lets them buy the upcoming pass early. The standard version costs 1,100 Battlefield Coins, while the upgraded “Battlefield Pro” bundle is priced at $24.99 and includes extra cosmetics, XP boosts, and tier skips.

Those who pre-order receive a few bonus rewards immediately, including exclusive weapon skins and additional tier skips. Buyers will also have the pass automatically activated once the new season begins.

While game pre-orders have long been common in the industry, pre-ordering a battle pass before its contents are shown is a much newer concept. The move has sparked debate among players, especially because the full list of cosmetics and unlocks remains unknown.

Community reactions have been mixed. Some longtime players argue the system makes sense for dedicated fans who already plan to buy every season pass anyway, especially since the pre-order bonuses come at no extra cost. Others believe paying upfront for unrevealed digital content pushes monetization too far.

The controversy arrives during a difficult period for Battlefield 6. Despite a strong launch and positive reviews, reports suggest the game’s active player numbers have declined significantly in recent months. EA has attempted to address criticism by adding new maps, improving progression systems, and introducing requested features like a server browser.

Even with the backlash, the pre-order system may still appeal to highly active players who regularly complete battle passes and recycle earned premium currency into future seasons. For more casual players, however, many are choosing to wait until EA fully reveals Season 3’s rewards before spending money.
