Shadow of the Tomb Raider Controversy

The last thing Tomb Raider wants is to get labeled as a rip off of the close swashbuckling competitor, the Uncharted series. And that is exactly what their latest trailer seems to be suggesting. Users have noticed that the latest promotional video for the game, which is due for a release in September, is borrowing music from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

This was first noticed by RobinGaming on Twitter, who pointed out that the trailer clearly uses the percussion from a very similar track in Uncharted 2. The soundtrack called “Cornered” from Uncharted 2 often plays during combat encounters.

Once you’re done listening to the percussion, compare the soundtrack with the one found in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The only noticeable difference that can be heard is the use of other instruments being layered on top.

The resemblance is uncanny and throws off the authenticity that the rebooted Tomb Raider series has meticulously carved out for itself after being out of the loop for several years.

While this similarity isn’t enough reason for Sony and Naughty Dog to file a lawsuit, it does trigger a few questions. Why would Eidos Montreal borrow music from their direct competitors? Aren’t they getting compared enough already?

How could this have slipped by? Were they so enthralled by the music that sneaking it in didn’t feel like an act of plagiarism? Or was it just an incredibly strange, strange coincidence?

The Resemblance to Uncharted 2

If you’ve played Sony’s PlayStation exclusive Uncharted series, then you will immediately connect the dots. The music is exactly the same and fans of the genre aren’t exactly pleased about it.

Lara Croft and Nathan Drake are very close competitors, and thanks to the strong acting and some amazing creative action sequences, both games remain at the top of their genres. Both have players scale across dangerous platforms and performing amazing feats of parkour.

Tomb Raider Accused of Stealing Other Game Concepts

This isn’t the only game that Lara Croft has been accused of stealing from. According to the Lead Game designer for Tomb Raider, Lara Croft will be able to boost her ‘focus’ by foraging herbs and concocting potions. This will allow her to slow down time while aiming in pretty much the same manner as used in Max Payne games.

The Insecurities of the Square Enix Team

It seems that tensions over at Square Enix are very high and they take personal offense to the widespread praise and attention their rivals Naughty Dogs are reveling in. Very recently the studio head of Eidos Montreal, David Anfossi called The Last of Us 2 “fake” in his tweet.

Will Lawsuits get thrown around?

While Twitter user “RobinGaming” has been on point about Tomb Raider using the same soundtrack from Uncharted 2, it would be a little naïve to believe that lawsuits will be thrown around because of it.
