Activision is confident that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will hold its own against the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 launch, despite releasing just weeks apart. While many publishers have strategically delayed their games to avoid competing with Rockstar's massive franchise, the FPS giant is taking a different approach.
The new Modern Warfare, launching October 23rd, sits in an interesting position—arriving roughly three weeks before GTA 6 hits shelves. Industry observers questioned whether players would completely abandon the shooter once the open-world behemoth arrives, but Activision's leadership remains unfazed. Tyler Bahl, the company's Chief Marketing Officer, argues that both titles occupy different enough spaces in the gaming landscape that they'll actually complement each other rather than cannibalize sales.
Bahl pointed out that increased gaming discourse and media attention benefits the entire industry. "More people taking the dust off their consoles means more eyeballs overall," he explained, emphasizing that Call of Duty's strength lies in its community and social elements rather than raw gameplay mechanics alone. With both games driving engagement across gaming platforms simultaneously, Activision believes there's enough audience appetite to sustain both franchises.
Looking ahead, Activision also confirmed that the next Call of Duty installment will launch a completely new sub-franchise, moving away from both the Modern Warfare and Black Ops brands. The company acknowledged that Black Ops 7 underperformed against player expectations, stating they've heard the community's concerns and are responding accordingly with a fresh direction.
