Mark Gordon, the longtime leader who guided the Black Ops franchise through its entire lifespan, has officially retired from Treyarch after more than two decades with the studio. Gordon joined the company in 2005 as Chief Technology Officer and steadily climbed the ranks, eventually becoming Studio Head and overseeing every Black Ops title from inception to today. His departure marks the end of an era for one of competitive gaming's most influential franchises.
The studio has appointed two executives to split the Studio Head responsibilities going forward. Kevin Hendrickson, who previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Treyarch since 2022, brings extensive franchise experience from his eight years leading production across the entire Call of Duty series at Activision. Joining him is Yale Miller, who has been with Treyarch since 2017 and most recently served as Director of Production. Together, the duo aims to maintain the momentum that Gordon established.
Gordon's exit isn't unprecedented at the studio. Design director David Vonderhaar departed in 2023 after nearly two decades, and co-studio head Dan Bunting left in 2021, signaling a broader shift in leadership. However, the timing presents unique challenges for Hendrickson and Miller, as Black Ops 7 is currently live with Season 4 underway. The new leadership team inherits an active competitive ecosystem with established player bases and community expectations to manage.
The transition marks a significant moment for the franchise as it enters a new chapter with fresh leadership while maintaining the infrastructure and legacy built over more than two decades of development and esports competition.
