Modern Warfare 4’s latest reveal gave fans their first proper look at the Gunsmith, along with fresh multiplayer menus and new gameplay footage. But despite all the new details, one addition has already sparked backlash: Gunny.
With Modern Warfare 4 launching on October 23, 2026, the next Call of Duty is only a few months away from arriving on consoles, PC, and Nintendo Switch. As the release draws closer, Infinity Ward has continued to showcase new features, including Kill Block, expanded gameplay, and a deeper look at weapon attachments and progression.
One feature that quickly caught players’ attention was Gunny, an assistant designed to help players build their ideal loadouts. Not everyone is impressed.
New Gunny feature sparks backlash
After the first look at the revamped Gunsmith, fans noticed Gunny sitting on the right side of the screen with the message: "Hello, I can help you build a weapon when you have more attachments unlocked."
The response on social media was swift.
"They got an AI chat bot in the game now to help mfs with their loadouts as if it’s not the same sh*t used every year," one player joked.
Another sarcastically wrote: "Can’t wait for it to recommend a 6x variable zoom for my M4 so I can maintain distance and still put out significant damage."
Some reactions were far harsher, with one player calling it "the epitome of everything wrong with all this st fk this game."
Not everyone dismissed the feature outright, though. Some players speculated on how it could work, with one suggesting: "I thought Gunny was going to bring you to a menu with a human NPC who spoke to you with some canned lines and provided the build. I think that’d be easier for players to connect with and help ground you in the setting instead of looking like a modern AI."
It's also worth noting that Infinity Ward has not confirmed Gunny is powered by AI. In the official blog, the studio describes the feature as "featuring configurations developed by Infinity Ward's Weapons Team."
Exactly how players will feel about Gunny once Modern Warfare 4 launches remains to be seen. For now, the early reaction has been largely negative, although the preview also notes that the showcased assets and gameplay are still in development and could change before release. Infinity Ward has already responded to player concerns surrounding visual recoil, so it remains possible the studio could address feedback on Gunny as well.
