Taylor Sheridan to Produce Call of Duty Movie — and Fans Are Already Joking About It
After years of speculation, a Call of Duty movie is finally on the way, with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan set to produce. But as soon as the news broke, fans across the internet had the same reaction.
Given that the Call of Duty franchise has sold over 500 million copies since its 2003 debut, it’s surprising it’s taken this long for Hollywood to take a shot at it. Activision, meanwhile, isn’t slowing down — Black Ops 7 is set to launch on November 14, 2025.
Sheridan is teaming up with director Peter Berg to write and produce the project at Paramount. It marks another major collaboration for the Yellowstone, Landman, and Special Ops: Lioness creator, even as he eyes a move to NBCUniversal in 2029.
But studio politics aside, fans couldn’t resist cracking jokes about what a Call of Duty movie might look like.
“If It Doesn’t Start in a Toxic Lobby, It’s Not Call of Duty”
The biggest question for players is whether Sheridan and Berg will craft a grounded military story like the games’ campaigns — or lean into meta territory like Free Guy, Jumanji, or the upcoming Minecraft movie.
Online, fans quickly joked that Sheridan would have his hands full translating the chaos of an online Call of Duty lobby to the big screen.
One user quipped:
“Who’s playing the Unicorn that farts rainbows? Can’t wait to see Nicki and Snoop on the big screen.”
Another wrote:
“If it doesn’t start with a 12-year-old screaming slurs in the lobby, it’s not accurate.”
And another added:
“Can’t wait for the 45-minute cutscene where they argue about who gets the last kill.”
What Story Will It Tell?
With most players drawn to Call of Duty’s multiplayer and Warzone modes, Sheridan faces a tough choice about the movie’s direction. Will it adapt the original Modern Warfare storyline? The Black Ops saga? Something entirely new?
Whatever route it takes, the Call of Duty movie already has one clear challenge — living up to the sheer intensity (and absurdity) of the game’s fanbase.
