Standalone CoD Zombies game for next-gen

A fresh Call of Duty leak has claimed that the idea of a standalone CoD Zombies title has been floated to release alongside the next generation of consoles amid a “delay” to the new Xbox.

For the best part of two decades, Call of Duty had been wedded to an annual release cycle, with new games releasing in November, just in time for the holiday season. However, over the last few years, that has changed a little bit.

After Black Ops 7’s release, Activision announced that there would be an even bigger shake-up moving forward,  confirming that they would no longer pre release back to back titles from the same franchise. They also said they wanted to “provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.”

Well, a fresh leak from The Ghost of Hope is on those lines too, with a suggestion that there could be a standalone Zombies game coming with the launch of next-gen consoles.

Two CoD games reportedly planned for next-gen console launch

“Sources indicate to me that the delay on the next Xbox has “hurt” a lot of COD’s marketing plans as they wanted Modern Warfare 4 to be a launch title and draw a lot of hype to compete with people’s attention alongside GTA VI,” the leaker posted on X (formerly Twitter) on February 22.

“Because of this delay, the idea of two Call of Duty games launching with the next Xbox has been floated. A traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and a standalone Zombies title, presumably developed by Treyarch. Likely similar to that of Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered were both released together.”

GhostOfHope also claimed that Microsoft wants Activision to “be more agile” and “less attached to annualized releases” moving forward.

A standalone Zombies game would, undeniably, be a huge boost to the dedicated community that the mode has built over the years. However, the official Call of Duty account on X has looked to extinguish the flames, at least a bit.

“The rumor factory working overtime. This ain’t it,”  the account said in in response to us sharing the leaker’s comments.

This could purely be damage control or a total shutdown of the claims. Only time will tell who’s correct.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is reportedly still slated for a 2026 release, while the next generation of consoles has been apparently pushed back until 2028 at the earliest
