Call of Duty's battle royale is shutting down on last-generation consoles once Modern Warfare 4 launches this October. Players currently on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will lose access to Warzone when Season 1 rolls out, marking a significant shift toward next-gen platforms only.
Activision has already begun the transition process. Starting June 4, new players won't be able to download Warzone on PS4 or Xbox One, though existing players can continue until Season 1 officially launches. By June 25, the in-game store functionality disappears on these platforms, limiting further cosmetic and battle pass purchases. Players can still grind free battle pass tiers through the final Black Ops 7 seasons before the shutdown.
The restriction applies exclusively to last-generation hardware. Anyone playing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, or PC won't experience any disruption. For competitive players still on older consoles, this could serve as the push needed to upgrade, especially since account progression transfers seamlessly between generations using linked Activision credentials.
Modern Warfare 4 itself is coming October 23 with fresh campaign settings in Korea and the United States, plus significant multiplayer overhauls including the return of classic features like the minimap, map voting, and the Prestige system. The game's integration with Warzone will create a unified seasonal progression system across both titles for next-gen players.
