First Impressions of Cyberpunk 2077

If you were making a list of games that generated the most buzz at this year’s E3 Convention, Cyberpunk 2077 would undoubtedly be in the top five. Cyberpunk 2077 comes from developer CD Projekt Red and is an incredibly ambitious open-world RPG set in a grim and cyber future. Recently the developer released a 48-minute gameplay demo and the world was able to get a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming release. After watching the demo, here are some first impressions.

Right away we start with the character creation screen and there’s some pretty cool stuff here like a fluid class system that you can alter throughout the game and Key life events that will determine certain options you get in the game. There’s definitely some cool stuff here but nothing as ground breaking as we were promised. From there we launch into the actual gameplay and right away the graphics are incredible. The H.U.D and feel of the game makes it seem like Fallout but with less cartoonish graphics. There is also a bullet time feature that seems to be a faster paced alternative to Fallout’s V.A.T.S System. From just the first mission and a few minutes after, the demo makes it very clear that this game is going to be incredibly expansive and the world that they have created seems beautiful with just about everything in it ready to be interacted with. One of the many ambitious goals the developers are hoping to achieve is having one of the biggest playable maps and boasting zero loading screens.

As the demo progresses, the main mission we follow is a fairly standard introductory mission doing a job for the city’s kingpin Dexter Deshawn. The task is to steal some weapons from a rival crew while working with a high strung corporate officer. Which leads to perhaps the only concern of the demo. While the gameplay and graphics are truly impressive, the story seems to be nothing you haven’t seen before from Bladerunner or Deus Ex. With a game as ambitious and expansive as the demo presents, it shouldn’t be too much to ask for the story to be as ambitious and expansive as well. Still given how fun and interactive the gameplay looks and how deep each decision plays into the overall experience, it’s very possible this game will still be incredibly addicting regardless.

It’s still too early to make large scale judgements about how good the game will be or not, but so far Cyberpunk 2077 is looking incredibly promising. Ultimately it seems like the success of the game will boil down to just how many options there are throughout the game and just how diverse player experience can be. That combined with fun interesting missions and a compelling storyline could truly cause Cyberpunk 2077 to be a breakout hit.
